OAKVILLE — The Town of Oakville is giving the public the opportunity to weigh in on a future it says is intended to protect the character of local neighbourhoods.

Residents are invited to attend a public meeting on April 19 to give their thoughts on a proposed local variance criteria bylaw.

Town staff said the bylaw seeks to better control changes that can be made in stable residential neighbourhoods by providing a scope as to what is considered a minor variance.

It would also establish criteria that must be considered before a minor variance could be authorized.

“Our goal is to only allow changes that do not alter the character of our neighbourhoods. It is vitally important our residents and builders participate in this process.”

The drafting of the bylaw follows a council request for town staff to investigate how to better manage redevelopment and replacement housing within residential neighbourhoods.

“Our goal is to only allow changes that do not alter the character of our neighbourhoods,” said Oakville Mayor Rob Burton.

“It is vitally important our residents and builders participate in this process.”

The meeting will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Trafalgar Room at town hall.

A statutory public meeting will be held as part of the May 14 planning and development council meeting at town hall.

The bylaw will then go to council for final approval in June.
