Town council has voted unanimously to approve the 2018 review of the Switching Gears Transportation Master Plan.

The decision sets community transportation priorities between now and 2031.

Town staff say the plan ensures balanced and sustainable transportation options moving forward.

“Switching Gears offers efficient and sustainable transportation choices for people, goods and services to move around Oakville,” said Oakville Mayor Rob Burton.

“The updated transportation master plan offers a balanced approach between strategic road improvements and other transportation choices.”

Town staff said the plan looks at all modes of transportation including public transit, walking, cycling and ride-sharing along with strategic roadway improvements to ensure a safe, convenient and efficient movement of people and goods.

It identifies the transportation facilities, services and policies that the town will implement to serve a projected population of 246,400 people by 2031.

It sets direction for the Town’s day-to-day transportation programs as well as long and mid-range implementation plans, provides a basis for budget planning, area and corridor transportation studies, and design guidelines.

It also provides input into the Town’s Development Charge Bylaw.

Launched in 2013, Switching Gears is the town's guiding document for developing practical, sustainable, long-term plans to guide the town's transportation system to meet the needs of its anticipated growth to 2031.
