The Town of Oakville has received more than $645,000 from the province to help improve local bike lanes and cycling infrastructure.

“Oakville has more bike lanes than Toronto on a per-capita basis, and more absolute bike lanes than any of our neighbours.”The funding, announced Dec. 12, is part of a provincial initiative that will see 120 Ontario municipalities receive $93 million to improve their cycling infrastructure.

“This grant will allow us to continue to be leaders in providing bike lanes for our cyclists,” said Oakville Mayor Rob Burton in a press release.

“Oakville has more bike lanes than Toronto on a per-capita basis, and more absolute bike lanes than any of our neighbours.”

The investment is part of Ontario’s Climate Change Action Plan and is funded by proceeds from the province’s cap on pollution and carbon market.

The funding can be used to cover up to 80 per cent of eligible project costs. [The Town will add more than $160,000 to bring the total to $805,000.]

Town staff said the funds would be used to increase or improve existing on-road bike lanes, multi-use trails, signed routes, and sharrows (cycle lane markers).

A list of the projects and locations will be presented to council for consideration early in the new year.

The town currently has more than 200 km of on-and-off-road bike lanes and multi-use trails.
