The Town of Oakville has received an economic development award from the International Economic Development Council (IEDC) for its Invest Oakville website, investoakville.ca.

The website was recognized with a Gold Excellence Award in the General Purpose Website category during the IEDC’s annual conference in Toronto on Sept. 19.

The IEDC’s Excellence in Economic Development Awards recognizes the world’s best economic development programs and partnerships, marketing materials, and the year’s most influential leaders.

“Oakville is a dynamic and vibrant community and home to a growing number of market-leading companies,” said Oakville Mayor Rob Burton in a press release.

“The Invest Oakville website is an important online resource available to companies big and small to explore the many benefits the town has to offer as a prime location to develop a successful business.”

Investoakville.ca provides site selectors, companies and investors with a variety of information including Oakville’s latest demographic and workforce data, market trends, leading sectors and top employers.

The site is also home to Find Oakville, an interactive site selection tool that layers development information, demographic data, and market data with available sites and buildings.

Oakville’s economic development data and details were previously housed on the town’s website. However, federal funding from the Invest Canada — Community Initiatives Program resulted in the creation of investoakville.ca.

Town staff said the intention was to bring this information into a standalone site to better promote Oakville as an ideal location for business investment through digital marketing.

“On behalf of the IEDC board of directors and Excellence in Economic Development Awards Advisory Committee, congratulations to the Town of Oakville,” said Michael Langley, 2017 IEDC Board Chair.

“Not only did they work to provide a necessary service to their community, but also their participation in the awards program sheds light on their stellar projects which other communities can now use as a benchmark.”

The town was also recognized at the conference for being named in fDi Magazine’s 2017/2018 American Cities of the Future report earlier this year, making the top-10 list for business friendliness in the small city category.

The town was showcased for excelling in the areas of knowledge economy, lifestyle, location, tax rates and workforce; ranking fifth on the list that included other provincial and North American cities.
