Progress continues with the redevelopment plans for the former hospital (OTMH) site and the town is inviting residents to attend an open house on Thursday, September 28 at Town Hall to learn more.

Residents are also encouraged to take part in one of two consultation sessions that day about the preliminary conceptual designs for the South East Community Centre that is planned for the site.

“We encourage everyone to come out to learn more and to share ideas,” Mayor Rob Burton said. “Council believes community engagement is vital to our success in everything we do.”

In June, following extensive public consultation, Town Council approved the amenities for community centre and endorsed a master plan for the lands that sees a residential district in the north, a civic district with a community centre and park in the middle, and a seniors-oriented housing district in the south.

Redevelopment of the lands is being rolled out in phases with the building of the community centre and park as a first priority. These new facilities are scheduled to open in fall 2020.

In July, the team selected a multi-disciplinary team led by Graham Construction and Engineering Inc. and Diamond Schmitt Architects for the design and construction of the community centre. Preliminary design concepts are now available to share with the community for feedback.
“Our goal is to design a community centre that will complement the neighbourhood’s distinct character,” said Colleen Bell, commissioner of Community Services. “We would like to hear from you about the conceptual designs because your input will help us create a centre that meets the needs of all residents.”

This summer, the town’s demolition contractor mobilized on site. The overall demolition and remediation will take approximately 12 months to complete. The development of the community will begin in late 2017 and take about three years.

Moving ahead, a number of Planning Act approvals are necessary in order for the redevelopment of the site to proceed including official plan and zoning amendments, and draft plan of subdivision/site plan approvals. The public meeting regarding amendments to the town’s official plan and zoning by-law is scheduled to go to Planning and Development Council on October 11, 2017.
Other phases for the redevelopment of the lands include:

1) A residential area that complements the existing neighbourhood and maintains the character of the community as intended in the official plan.

2) A seniors-oriented housing area that could range from independent seniors-living to assisted-care. Further discussions with members of the community and stakeholders will be needed to help define these opportunities. The town is also exploring the potential of integrating the former high school into the seniors-oriented housing area, including a publicly accessible space in front of the high school.

To learn more about what’s been done on the site, and what’s coming up, residents can drop into the open house in the South Atrium at Town Hall anytime between 5 – 7 p.m.

For those who want to provide input into the community centre’s preliminary conceptual designs, there are two consultation sessions being held in the Oakville and Trafalgar rooms before and after the open house. One from 3:30 - 5:30 p.m. and a second one from 7 - 9 p.m.

The former site of the Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH) was part of the town's overall South Central Public Lands Study (SCPLS) which reviewed a number of key sites owned by the town in south central Oakville (e.g. surplus school sites, Oakville Arena) and made recommendations about their future use, including recreation uses. The site consists of lands on the south side of Macdonald Road between Reynolds Street and Allan Street.
