Oakville has been selected as the location of one of three new Connectivity and Innovation Centres (CIC), as part of the federal government’s $102.4 million investment to the Ford Motor Company of Canada.

"It is great to see Ford continue to grow in Oakville," Mayor Burton said. The other two CICs will be located in Waterloo and Ottawa – creating 300 new jobs across Ontario, according to Federal Economic Development Minister Navdeep Bains. Some of these jobs will be on the assembly line, but many will be in engineering.

Bains told the Oakville Beaver that Oakville was selected because of its “strong automotive footprint”.

The centres will focus on four key projects: connectivity, mobility, data analytics and customer experience. The CICs will develop pioneering hardware and software for next generation vehicles, along with products and services, which will be available through cloud computing.

“Today’s announcement will help provide good quality, skilled jobs both at home here in Oakville and across Southern Ontario,” said Oakville MP John Oliver, who is Chair of the Federal Government’s Automotive Caucus, in a media release.

“It will also ensure that Canadians are part of creating connected and efficient vehicles for the future,” Oliver added. The Government’s support for innovation in the auto industry means better opportunities for Canadians and growth in our economy.”

“For years, Ford has been a vital part of Oakville’s local economy, fostering innovation, productivity and good, middle-class jobs,” added Mayor Burton, in a media release. “It is great to see it continue to grow, in Oakville and across Ontario.”

Ford is currently in negotiation to select a location and hire staff for the new CICs. Bains said further details would be announced in a matter of weeks.
